Investigators with the Cobourg Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch, supported by uniform patrol,
have charged a Cobourg man following a hate-motivated incident in the Town of Cobourg.
On July 10, 2021, members of the Cobourg Police Service responded to a business in the north end of
Cobourg. Officers learned that a man damaged a sign at the business, yelled at one of the employees, then
robbed the employee of an item of religious significance and threatened the employee’s life.
As a result of the investigation, police identified and arrested Daniel Annesley, a 51-year old Cobourg resident.
He was charged with the following:
Enter premises when entry prohibited – contrary to section 2(1)(a)(i) of the Trespass to Property Act x

Mischief under $5000 – contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada
Weapons Dangerous – contrary to section 88 of the Criminal Code of Canada
Utter Death Threats – contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
Robbery contrary to section 343(d) of the Criminal Code of Canada
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – contrary to section 355(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
The incident is believed to be hate motivated, and those elements will be brought forward during the court
process.
Annesley appeared at bail hearing on July 10, 2021 and was remanded to July 12, 2021 at 900 am.
The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is aware that hate-motivated incidents are often not reported. We want to
assure the community that we take these incidents seriously and investigate all reports received. Residents
are encouraged to report any incident they believe may be motivated by hate or discrimination.

orientation, gender identity or mental or physical disability will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
