SIU Investigating after Police Officer Fatally Shoots Man in Toronto

In Police Blotter

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the police-involved fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man last night in Toronto.
Preliminary information suggests the following

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on May 22, 2021, ambulance personnel contacted police for assistance with a man who was in mental distress. As a result, Toronto Police Service officers were dispatched to a condominium building at 1815 Yonge Street.

The officers made their way to the 3rd floor where they quickly encountered a man with a knife in the hallway.

The man approached an officer and began stabbing the officer. As a result, that officer and a second officer discharged their conducted energy weapons at the man. When this proved to have no effect, the second officer discharged his firearm one time at the man. The man was struck.

The man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The injured officer and the three other involved officers were also taken to hospital.

Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. At this time, one subject official and four witness officials have been designated. The post-mortem is scheduled for this afternoon in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
