Another Farmers’ Market season opens May 8, Cobourg Councillor Adam Bureau announced at this week’s council meeting.

The agreement council approved was prepared with the help and guidance of the Town of Cobourg and the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit. It provides for the use of Rotary Harbourfront Park on Saturdays between May 8 and Oct. 30 at a daily rate of $130 plus HST, and even has a clause outlining COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines.

Bureau said hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. – one hour longer than then 2020 Farmers’ Markets – and they are expecting more than 35 vendors, including such new exhibitors as Century Game Park, Rice Lake Hard Cider and William Street Beer Company.

Most of the vendors are selling food, and these are the ones that will be carefully spaced around the central water fountain. Craft vendors will be set up at the grassy area in the southwest portion of the park.

“We look forward to showcasing more of Northumberland County’s artisans,” the councillor said.

“Everyone thanks council and staff for recognizing how important the Farmers’ Market is as an essential service.”

Mayor John Henderson noted that opening day traditionally includes a ceremony with the mayor, a councillor and a piper.

“We had to respectfully decline, based on an update we received from Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit asking us not to be part of that,” Henderson said.

“Based on that, Councillor Bureau and I respectfully declined, and they were very understanding. But we wish them a great day May 8 on behalf of council.”
