Financial relief will help ensure the delivery of critical services, support the vaccine rollout and keep capital projects on track.
MPP David Piccini announced the Ontario Government is providing $3 million to help municipalities in Northumberland-Peterborough South to address ongoing COVID-19-related operating costs.
The new financial relief will help ensure the delivery of critical services during the pandemic and keep capital projects on track.
Piccini explained in a in-depth video interview with Today’s Northumberland how important the funding is to municipalities.
“We need to ensure Ontarians continue to receive the critical supports they rely on,” said Piccini.
Our municipalities deliver important local services our communities and residents rely on each and every day, in addition, they are supporting the vaccine rollout while also proceeding with planned projects that will help drive Ontario’s economic recovery. This funding from the Government of Ontario is a message to everyone in our local community that we will continue to be a strong partner in recovery.”
This announcement is part of the province’s $500-million investment to help ensure the stability of Ontario’s 444 municipalities as they plan for the year ahead. Municipalities have the flexibility to use this funding to address the specific priorities of their communities based on their unique COVID-19 relating operating pressures. Funding can be used for things like by-law enforcement, municipal costs associated with testing centers, and offsetting lost revenues as a result of facilities being closed.
Township of Cramahe Township, Mayor Mandy Martin said, “in Cramahe Township we work together to support and ensure all are supported and included as we make the best of COVID-19 challenges. This recognition and support from the provincial government confirms we all have greater strength working together.”
Township of Alnwick-Haldimand, Mayor Gail Latchford said, “this is the time the Township of Alnwick-Haldimand and our ratepayers can benefit from the additional provincial funding which will ease our decisions in determining financial needs in reopening, recovering and moving forward.”
Municipality of Brighton, Mayor Brian Ostrander said, “The Municipality of Brighton is grateful for the additional funds from the Province of Ontario that will aid with our COVID responses, recovery and re-start plans. These funds will help us set strategic priorities for the community as we navigate through the balance of 2021.”
