Durham Police – Stop Stick Used to Arrest Fleeing Suspect

In Police Blotter

A stop stick was used to deflate the tires of a suspect who was fleeing from police after breaking into vehicles in Newcastle. Investigators now want to return numerous stolen items to their rightful owners.

On Tuesday, January 19, 2021 shortly before 1:30 a.m., East Division officers were called to the area of Goheen Street in Newcastle (Clarington) for a report of a suspicious person and suspicious vehicle. A male party was seen attempting to break into vehicles in the area and a description of the suspect and vehicle were relayed to police.

Officers located the vehicle and observed it driving past stop signs in snowy conditions. Officers followed the vehicle onto Highway 2 and the driver refused to pull over. A stop stick was eventually deployed in the area of Solina Road and Taunton Road. Further investigation revealed that both the license plate on the vehicle and the vehicle itself were stolen.

Nicholas DUFFY, age 29, of No Fixed Address, has been charged with: Flight From Police Officer; Trespassing at Night; Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance; Fail to Comply with Undertaking x2; Possess Proceeds Obtained By Crime Under $5,000 x2; and Fail to Comply with Probation Order. He was later released on an Undertaking.

Investigators are calling for any home surveillance or dash cam videos from the area to ensure there are no other victims.

Recovered items include various power tools, wallets, credit/debit cards, an air compressor, clothing, footwear and CDs and DVDs. For further information, please contact Cst. Shahshani of the East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1641.
