Local Transit Services Gets a Big Boost by Province

In Provincial

Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini announces that the Ontario Gas Tax Program is providing Northumberland with $462,443 in support for four local transit services.

That works out to for $203,868 for Cobourg, $168,161 for Port Hope, $52,274 for the Township of Cramahe and $38,140 for the Municipality of Trent Hills.

The funding should flow “as soon as possible in 2021,” according to the announcement.

This is part of the $375-million the province is providing in gas tax funding for 109 municipalities to deliver public transit to 144 Ontario communities.

Funding for this program is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province during the previous year. Municipalities supporting public transit services in their communities receive two cents per litre of provincial gas-tax revenue collected, which can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.

“Our government is committed to helping municipalities sustain and improve public transit throughout the province,” Piccini said in the announcement.

“Supporting transit systems is more important than ever as municipalities across Ontario struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding will help ensure people have access to safe, reliable transportation to get to work or pick up essential items like a prescription.”
