MP Philip Lawrence, Member of Parliament for Northumberland – Peterborough South, has issued the following statement on his appointment as Shadow Minister for National Revenue:

“Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, government spending in Canada is at an all-time high,” said Lawrence With various relief packages totaling hundreds of billions of dollars, Canada is in a precarious economic position. This year Canadians will face previously unseen challenges with the clawback of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit imminent.”

“Canadians already struggling to pay their bills because of the pandemic may be left devastated after the upcoming tax season. Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau’s government has allowed many people to fraudulently collect CERB.”

“While my constituents will always be my greatest priority, I want to thank Erin for placing his trust in me and will work tirelessly to hold the government to account and do right by Canadians.

“Prior to entering politics, I worked as a lawyer specializing in corporate and tax law, followed by 10 years working in the financial sector. I believe my experience in taxation, law and business will allow me to best serve Canadians during these uncertain times.

“We need a strong government who won’t cater to elites and special interests but will fight for working Canadians, and a government led by Erin O’Toole will do just that. I am eager
to work alongside Erin O’Toole to hold the government to account with a plan to encourage economic growth, reduce the federal deficit and get Canada back on track.”
