Reopening Of East Pier In Port Hope A Priority for Fishing Season

In Editor Choice, Local

Today’s Northumberland found out the reason why the east pier in Port Hope has been closed.

Despite a sign stating “Access To This Area Is Prohibited” a number of anglers were in the roped off area on evening of Thursday and morning of Friday August 21, 2020.

One witness said at one point there were over 100 people. Fines for entering the prohibited area were $150.00.

Today’s Northumberland reached out to Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture Jim McCormack for answers.

“Those signs and rope were put up in the spring when we closed access to the river.”

McCormack said the town left them up as there were a number of areas that were washed out from the high water last year.

“We didn’t repair yet as they were calling for high water again this year but that didn’t happen.”

Adding to the problem is the town was short staffed for the first half of spring and summer.

It seems as a result of the inquiry by Today’s Northumberland, repairs will begin shortly.

“I’ve asked my staff to reassess and complete repairs so we can re open that area as fishing season begins to pick up.”
