Garbage Dumped in Alnwick/Haldimand Cemetery

Northumberland OPP are investigating after garbage was dumped in a cemetery in Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Dave Archer who is Director of Fairview Cemetery located on Shelter Valley Road just north of County Road 2 east of Grafton told Today’s Northumberland, “it’s a slap in the face that somebody would disrespect a cemetery of all places.”

For a number of weeks garbage is being dumped over an embankment just a few metres from graves including those of a veteran and fallen soldier.

“A lot of times it’s yard waste which is one thing, but lately we’re finding a lot of trash and garbage and stuff that just should not be here.”

“People come here. They are in grief when they come here. They come here for quiet and visit. And for somebody to come here and dump their garbage is a real slap in the face to everybody that has family here.”

Archer and a representative of Northumberland County Waste spent Wednesday morning cleaning up the garbage that included household waste, papers including court documents, an actual garbage bin.

There was enough garbage to fill up a County pickup truck.

Archer said some of the documents found were given to Northumberland OPP who are investigating. Archer said the names of the people found in the garbage denied doing it when they spoke to police. They stated someone stole their garbage from the curb.

The cemetery has been at the location since the 1800’s and Archer said it’s unfortunate, but they will be installing surveillance cameras.

“It’s not something we’d every have to do in a cemetery, but it has come to that.”
