Aub’s Army Creates New Twist for Relay for Life

It may not have been your typical “Relay for Life” in Port Hope on Sunday, June 7, 2020, but the message of love certainly came across from the community.

It was called “Aub’s Army” and a team of family and friends came together to honour and celebrate Aubrey Andrus who died on February 27, 2020 from ovarian cancer at the age of 41.

In these COVID times throughout the world, things have changed with social distancing, but the love and support from the community was greatly appreciated on Sunday by Andrus’ family including her husband Adam and children Isaac and Hayley.

Vehicles were decked out in true Relay for Life fashion with colourful ribbons, signs and balloons at Gilmer’s Home Hardware on Toronto Road then sharply at 1 p.m. the team of “Aub’s Army” headed out with the help of members of the Port Hope Police Service.

Port Hope Mayor Bob Sanderson and two councillors were on hand for the event.

Through the streets of Port Hope they travelled with horns hocking and sirens wailing collecting money along the way for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The group ended up in the parking lot of Food Basics on Peter Street.

Aub’s husband Adam said his wife would have been very happy with the event.

“I think she’s smiling somewhere wherever she is. She’s bringing the sun to us and she’s got a big smile on her face.”

“We had a great time. It was an honour to participate and we had a lot of good smiles and laughs – it was a great time.”

So far Aub’s Army has raised just under their goal of $5,000 but donations are still being accepted until June 12.

For donations go to relayforlife.ca and search for Aub’s Army.
