A person was recovered from the waters of Lake Ontario after a frantic search by emergency services in Cobourg. At approximately 6 p.m. Cobourg Fire Department and the Canadian Coast Guard were notified of a person in the water at least 100 metres from shore off of Ontario/Bagot Street area. Donning water immersion suits members of the fire department did a grid search along with the Coast Guard searching farther out. At least two witnesses from shore spotted the person in the water, but one witness didn’t think the person is the water was gesturing for help. A Search and Rescue helicopter from 424 Squadron/CFB Trenton was dispatched to the area and within a short time located the person in about 10 feet of water. A flare was dropped from the helicopter and a Search and Rescue Technician jumped from the helicopter into Lake Ontario. The person was placed in the Coast Guard boat and rushed to Cobourg marina where a ambulance took the person to Northumberland Hills Hospital with police escort. The person was underwater for at least two hours, but because of the coldness of the lake, they tried everything possible. OPP confirmed the person was pronounced dead at the hospital.
