Port Hope Farmer’s Market Opens for First Time This Season

In Editor Choice, Local

The Port Hope Farmer’s Market opened for the first time this season on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

COVID-19 has delayed many openings, but after consultation with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, the market obtained approval from the Municipality of Port Hope for use of the Town Hall parking lot.

The market has a number of guidelines in place due to COVID-19 and social distancing was a must for visitors and vendors.

Vendor Suzi Gabany said the first market for the season was great.

“It’s going great – it’s been an odd year.”

A number of visitors and vendors were wearing masks for protection, and Gabany said everyone was comfortable keeping the social distance from one another.

The numbers for visitors to the market on Saturday were down, but Gabany said there are a lot of people that likely didn’t know the market was open, coupled with it being a long weekend tends to be slower.

Gabany said most people were cautious because of COVID-19, but she has found a way to literally launder money.

Customers put their money in a soapy-water to soak. Gabany brought a float of money, but just in case she does need some, after the money has been soaked in water, she places it on the dashboard of her car to dry out.
