Cobourg Council – Metal Roofs Can Be Heritage-Friendly

In City Hall

At first blush, a metal roof may not seem the thing for a heritage building – but Cobourg council heard at Monday’s committee-of-the-whole meeting that this may not be true.

Council ended up endorsing the comments of the Heritage Advisory Committee advising a heritage permit for TVM Group to allow such a replacement at 37-39 King St, E.

“Is there any other precedent for historic buildings along King Street to do roof replacements using a metal roof – and what about ice and snow sliding off onto sidewalks?” Councillor Emily Chorley asked.

Director of Planning and Development Glenn McGlashon cited the Buttermilk Cafe at 44 King St. W. as one such instance of a metal roof replacement.

“They are required – and we will certainly be ensuring there are ice dams or bars running across the roof so the ice and snow doesn’t slide,” McGlashon said.
