What is a Forest School?

For Immediate Release – April 18th, 2018

PORT HOPE – An outdoor school is coming to Northumberland County! What is an outdoor school, you ask? An immersive nature school seamlessly blending outdoor and classroom education to encourage students to be curious, empathetic, self-aware, and deeply rooted in the natural world around them. Sounds awesome, right? We think so!

The Road Less Travelled Academy (RLTA) is set to open Fall 2018 in the Ganaraska Forest. While students will spend some 70% of their time outside in a piece of the 11,000 acre forest, they can also expect to welcome a range of guest teachers from across the community to share their wisdom and help add variety to programming and enhance student’s learning experience.

While everything RLTA does will be based in the natural classroom, special attention will be paid to building a basic set of outdoor knowledge and skills. Studies will include:

  • Environmental stewardship including hands on work removing invasive species and assisting with reforestation and conservation work
  • Tracking and Observation of both plants and animals
  • Survival Skills including safe management of fires, orienteering, and carving for older students

Want to know more? Forest Days are scheduled for Saturday, April 21st and 28th at RLTA’s headquarters located on-site at the Ganaraska Forest Centre. Come out and join us for an information session where you’ll walk away feeling just as excited as your children will be after day one spent at “school”.

Contact Connor Als (connor@rltacademy.ca) or Tammy Day (tammy@rltacademy.ca) for more information on RLTA or the upcoming Forest Days.
