Stocking for Seniors is up and running again for anyone who wishes to donate items.

Vicky Davis and her friend Lynn Stewart started the program four years ago to help make Christmas brighter for seniors living in long term care facilities.

Davis said a friend of hers in Orangeville had a Hamper for Seniors program and added the Stocking for Seniors.

Davis and her husband Marshal went up and participated in the event one year and she thought it was a amazing idea, she brought it to Northumberland.

“I decided on the way home, we need that in Northumberland County because there are a lot of seniors in homes that might be forgotten at Christmas.”

This is the forth year and the response each year has been amazing.

“We put it on social media and it’s completely blown up.”

The first year over 700 stockings were donated to seniors homes and for the last two years it’s been approximately 660.

The extra items are put in bags, then given to seniors homes so they can use throughout the year.

The Stockings for Seniors Program takes place in long term care facilities in Port Hope, Cobourg and this year Brighton area as well.

“Someday we are all going to be there and it’s nice to know we live in such a caring community.”

Anyone who wishes to participate can drop off items at the Toronto Dominion Bank on King Street in Cobourg, Bank of Montreal on Walton Street in Port Hope, Quinns Blooms and Greenery on Division Street in Cobourg or at Top Cuts Hair Salon located in Victoria Place Plaza on William Street in Cobourg.

All donations will be collected by December 8 and distributed to the long term care facilities by December 13 and will be handed out to the seniors on Christmas morning.

On November 18, 2019 items will also be greatly appreciated at the Cobourg Cougars game at the Cobourg Cobourg Centre.

Davis said “Just Brew-It” graciously helped out to store the items and local resident Scott Keys donated a number of items.
