Breaking News – Clean-Up Continues On Highway 401 Eastbound Lanes At Port Hope Following Multi-Vehicle Collision

Clean-up continues following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 just east of Port Hope in the eastbound lanes on Thursday, August 23, 2019.

On Friday, one lane was shut down as crews were cleaning up from the diesel leak from the transport along the shoulder of the highway and into the ditch.

Three vehicles and a transport truck were involved in the collision that happened shortly after 9 p.m. on the eastbound lanes at the Hamilton Township Boundary Road overpass.

Six people were transported to hospital with varying degrees of injuries.  One woman who has been identified on social media as 55-year-old Linda Bloom of Cobourg was airlifted to a Toronto hospital with what are described as critical injuries with broken ribs and a head injury.  The driver of the transport was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Port Hope were closed until early this morning when they re-opened with lane restrictions.

Collision Closes Eastbound Lanes Of Highway 401 In Port Hope

(MUNICIPALITY OF PORT HOPE, ON) – On Thursday August 22, 2019 shortly after 9:00 pm, members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with emergency personnel, responded to a collision on Highway 401 Eastbound at Hamilton Road east of Port Hope, involving a tractor trailer and three passenger vehicles.

Six people were transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment. One of those people, a 55-year-old female, was then transported by air ambulance to a Toronto area hospital with serious injuries.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 between Port Hope and Cobourg were closed for several hours while OPP members trained in collision reconstruction measured and documented the scene.

The Ministry Of Environment (MOE) attended the scene to address the leakage of diesel fuel that occurred as a result of the collision.

The Highway re-opened this morning at approximately 7:20 am.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
