Breaking News – Family Lucky To Escape As Fire Engulfs Home In Colborne

In Editor Choice, Local

Three members of a family were lucky to escape with their lives after fire destroyed a home south of Colborne on Sunday, August 18, 2019.

Cramahe Township Fire Department were called to the home on Victoria Beach Road at approximately 11:15 p.m.

As crews were responding to the scene they could see the glow from the fire kilometres away and knew it was a working fire.

Fire Chief Tim Burgess said when crews arrived, the home was engulfed in flames.  Three adult members of a family were safely out of the house.

Firefighters also had to contend with a pickup truck and car that also were engulfed in flames along with a large propane tank.

One of the residents was taken to hospital by Northumberland County Paramedics with burns and minor smoke inhalation.

“They were very lucky,” said Burgess.

“We can’t stress enough of the importance of smoke alarms. These folks didn’t have shoes on their feet and hardly any clothes on, so they made it out just in time.”

“We want residents to get out quick and fast and not take the time to put shoes on because seconds matter when you’re in a structure fire.”

Burgess said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this point.
