Cobourg Police Services Board Press Release May Be Misleading To Some

In Editor Choice, Local

A release issued by the Cobourg Police Services Board on Monday, July 29, 2019 may be misleading to some about the new position of the former Chief.

In the press released issued by the Cobourg Police Services Board communication officer Laurie Debattista it stated, ”Chief Kai Liu will be retiring from municipal policing to lead Ontario’s First Nations policing as Chief of Police with the Treaty Three Police Service.

But a police source informed Today’s Northumberland, “Treaty Three Police does not encompass all of Ontario’s first nations policing. There are numerous services administered by the OPP (Pikangikum, Bear Island, Big Trout Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, etc), Nishnawbi-Aski Police (which is the second largest First Nation Police Service in North America serves 34 communities in northern Ontario), Anisknabek Police which serves communities all over the province (including Curve Lake).”

The Cobourg Police Services Board also announced on Friday, Deputy Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf has been promoted to Chief with Dean Pepper who is Chair of the Police Services Board stating, “The board has absolute confidence Chief of Police Designate VandeGraaf will continue to take our service to the next level.”
