Off-duty Officer Arrests Male Armed with an Expandable Baton – Durham Region

In Police Blotter

An off-duty DRPS officer is being credited for disarming a 21-year-old male who stormed into a bar carrying an expandable baton.

On Sunday, April 1, 2018, at approximately 2:00 a.m., an off-duty police officer witnessed a male storm into the Tartan Tavern in Oshawa, attempting to start a fight with another patron. The off-duty officer had heard other patrons speaking about the male earlier in the evening and was aware that he may be armed. As the male lunged at another patron in the bar, the off-duty officer was able to tackle him, which caused the suspect to drop the expandable baton he was armed with. The suspect tried to fight off the officer, who was assisted by the bouncer from the bar as they waited for officers to arrive.

LUKE WILLMS, age 21 of Wilson Road North in Oshawa, is charged with: Possession of Weapons Dangerous; Fail to Comply with Probation and Public Intoxication.

Anyone with new information about these break and enters is asked to contact Cst. Pogson of East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1687.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
