In Editor Choice, Local

One person was airlifted following a horrific collision in Cobourg on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

At approximately 2 p.m. emergency services were dispatched to the Garden Centre of Canadian Tire on Elgin Street.

Reports indicate a car was travelling northbound on Rogers Road and collided with another vehicle before spinning around, striking both curbs at the entrance to Canadian Tire. The vehicle then headed west at a high rate of speed by the front entrance of the store before crashing through the area of the Garden Centre and finally coming to a stop after smashing through a fence.

One person was by the automotive area when he heard for the first impact and saw the car run into the curbs before speeding west.

“I saw the (debris) flying (in the Garden Centre) and I ran down to make sure everyone was alright.”

People were immediately tending to the woman, so the man ran to assist the people in the car.

“His door was stuck in the fence so I opened the door and said, “what happened?”

The driver said his brakes failed.

“He came flying right threw here,” said a horrified Sharon Irwin moments after the collision.

Irwin was in the Garden Centre when she saw the vehicle coming towards her.

“Right from the beginning, he never stopped.”

Irwin estimates the vehicle was travelling between 80 kph to 100 kph by the front entrance.

Numerous people who were by the entrance of Canadian Tire had to literally jump out of the way of the speeding vehicle.

The vehicle impacted the metal shelves with plants on them in the Garden Centre causing one of metal pieces to strike another woman in the Garden Centre tossing her into the air and landing unconscious on the pavement.

Irwin said she had to jump out of the way and missed being struck by inches.

People who witnessed the collision were all concerned what the status is of the injured woman.

The woman was airlifted from Northumberland Hills Hospital and her condition is unknown.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were called in to examine the scene and the vehicle will also be examined. Police also seized security video from Canadian Tire.
