Update – Ammonia Leak At CCC Caused By Gasket Failure

In Local

An ammonia leak at the Cobourg Community Centre on April 8, 2019 was caused by a gasket failure in one of the compressors.
Director of Community Services, Dean Hustwick stated, “Unfortunately, gaskets fail and this was not an unusual mechanical failure, although a leak of ammonia is always treated very seriously and cautiously.”
Hustwick said the sensors and alarms worked and the Cobourg Fire Department and the mechanical contractor responded very quickly and the CCC was re-opened by noon.
“A second compressor allowed the ice surfaces to continue to operate for late afternoon bookings, and the compressor with the failed gasket was fully repaired.”
Hustwick said a exhaust fan that is used to remove the ammonia from the area failed, but was repaired shortly after the incident.
“The fan was working, but the vent louvers had a problem due to a loose screw/bolt. The functionality had been inspected recently and had been confirmed operational.”
“Steps will be taken to lock such screw(s) to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”
