A Highways Safety Division OPP officer charged six drivers with Stunt Driving on Highway 401 on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
Highway Safety Division Constable Laperle was monitoring eastbound traffic on Highway 401 in the Port Hope area when the vehicles were stopped throughout six hours..
The first driver was stopped at approximately 8:30 a.m. and the last one was at 2:30 p.m.
Speeds of the vehicles were 162 kph, 154 kph, 163 kph, 155 kph, 154 kph and 156 kph.
“It’s dangerous not only for them, but for everyone else along the highway.”
At least two of the drivers only had their G2 license and one of the vehicles was a rental vehicle.
A 17-year-old (G-2 license) was driving a clients vehicle back to them in eastern Ontario when he was stopped and charged.
“One person said she was speeding up to pass another motorist,” said Laperle who has heard many excuses from people.
“Whether it was the weekend or the warm weather there is absolutely no excuse for driving that speed.”
“It’s dangerous not only for them, but for everyone else along the highway.”
“If you’re driving 155 kph and the speed limit is 100 kph it’s like driving around a stationary object when you don’t know if they are going to move into your lane or not.”
A vehicle will travel 41 metres every second driving at 150 kph.
“When people are driving reasonable speeds and they look in their mirror and there is no one in site, then all of a sudden there is, it’s dangerous.”
One driver was from Port Hope and the rest were from the Toronto area.
All driver’s had their vehicles towed and impounded for seven days along with their driver’s license for seven days and a minimum $2,000 fine.
