Northumberland OPP – Foot Patrol Results in Criminal Charges

On Sunday March 31, 2019 at approximately 12:30 pm officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting foot patrol in the area of Rice Lake Drive in the town of Bewdley.

A red Chevrolet sedan was observed to idling for a lengthy period of time in a suspicious location in the parking lot of a local area business. Upon approaching the vehicle the officer observed two occupants within the vehicle consuming drugs, and an open container of alcohol.

Officers seized drugs, weapons and a substantial amount of Canadian currency. As a result of the investigation police charged the following people:

Nicholas John MORIARTY (age 28) of Colborne, Ontario,
· Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
· Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin)
· Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
· Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition (two counts)
· Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
· Having liquor in open container in other than licenced premises, residence or private place

Tanya STEACY (age 43) of Brighton, Ontario,
· Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
· Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin)
· Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
· Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
· Having liquor in open container in other than licenced premises, residence or private place

Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on May 8, 2019.
