In City Hall

With the extreme-cold warnings issued earlier this week, the Town of Cobourg reminds residents of the locations of warming centres across the community for those seeking relief from the bitter chill.
Extreme-cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create an elevated risk to health, such as frost bite and hypothermia. The town has identified a number of public places as warming centres where protection may be sought.
The lobby at Victoria Hall (55 King St. W.) is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed weekends.
The Cobourg Community Centre (750 D’Arcy St.) is Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on long weekends.
Northumberland Mall (1111 Elgin St. W.) is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m to 5 p.m.
The Comfort Centre at the Cobourg Police Station (107 King St. W.) is open around the clock, seven days a week.
The Cobourg Public Library (200 Ontario St.) is open Mondays through Wednesdays fro 10 a.m. To 8 p.m., and Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As great as the risks are, the town’s press release said, they are even greater for certain at-risk populations such as young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
On occasion, extreme cold temperatures may force the closure of one of more of these facilities – as was the case Monday, when programming was cancelled at the Cobourg Community Centre and the building remained closed.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
