Two undefeated teams from neighbouring communities will put their perfect Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League records on the line Friday night when the defending champion Northumberland Stars host the expansion Brighton Vikings in Colborne.
Northumberland enters the matchup with a 10-0-0 record to open the 2026-27 season, while Brighton has won its first nine games.
The Stars are looking to build on a breakthrough 2025-26 campaign in which they captured their first Russell Cup championship.
Northumberland’s latest victory came Saturday in Colborne, where the Stars defeated the North York Renegades 5-3.
Swedish players Linus Carlsson and Simon Eriksson led the offensive charge. Carlsson scored twice, while Eriksson contributed a goal and two assists. Goaltender Ivan Kremnev turned aside 22 shots to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, the expansion Vikings have wasted little time making their presence felt in the GMHL.
Brighton improved to 9-0-0 with a 6-4 victory over St. George on Saturday night at King Edward Park Arena and handed the Durham Roadrunners a 9-0 drubbing Monday in Oshawa.
Waylon Morris of Port Hope scored in Saturday’s win, while Baltimore’s Wescott Hansen is also part of the Vikings lineup. Both players competed for Durham last season under Dennis Sicard of Cobourg, who is now Brighton’s head coach.
Puck drop Friday night between the Stars and Vikings is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Keeler Centre in Colborne.
