The Thanksgiving spirit was on full display Saturday in Port Hope as shoppers opened their hearts — and their wallets — to help neighbours in need.
The Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank held its Thanksgiving Food Drive on October 3 at Food Basics and Davis’ Your Independent Grocer, with volunteers collecting donations from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Helping make the food drive a success were members of the Port Hope Police and the Ontario Community Emergency Assistance Program (OCEAP), who joined volunteers at the stores throughout the afternoon.
The response from the community was generous, with shoppers donating both food and money to help ensure local families have access to the necessities they need.
Every bag of food and every dollar donated will help support the food bank and the people who rely on its services, particularly as Thanksgiving approaches and household budgets continue to be stretched.
And among the volunteers was one couple who had a particularly special reason for being there.
Christopher Whale and his wife, Katie, celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary by spending part of their special day volunteering at the Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Rather than spending the afternoon celebrating in the traditional way, the couple chose to give their time to help others in their community.
That’s something worth celebrating.
Congratulations Christopher and Katie — and thank you for giving back on your 23rd anniversary.
The generosity shown Saturday is another reminder that while times can be difficult for many families, the Northumberland community continues to come together when help is needed most.
