Cobourg’s Lauchlan Whelan was a first round pick Friday night at the 2026 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft in Kingston.

Whelan, who played this past season for the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA team, was selected 16th overall by the Windsor Spitfires.

The OHL draft, taking place at Slush Puppie Place in Kingston, is being held in-person for the first time in 25 years.

Cobourg’s Trent Clow, a teammate of Whelan with the Quinte Red Devils, could hear his name called early Saturday when rounds 2-15 continue in Kingston.

Whelan and Clow were among 120 participants recently at the OHL Futures Camp in St. Catharines.
