Northumberland OPP – Victim Succumbs to Injuries Following Highway 401 Collision

In Police Blotter

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal collision on Highway 401 and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. An individual has now been pronounced deceased in hospital as a result of the incident.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound near the service centre in the Municipality of Port Hope.

It is believed that one of the involved vehicles was parked on the shoulder when the driver exited the vehicle. During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle, and the motorist who had exited was also struck.

The individual was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, where they were later pronounced deceased.

There were no other serious injuries to those involved.

Highway 401 eastbound was closed at Newtonville for the investigation, with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management & Enforcement (TIME) team. All lanes reopened at around 3:30 p.m. on May 31, 2026.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca
