The Town of Cobourg would like to inform residents cold temperatures are expected overnight Friday, January 23 continuing through to Sunday, January 25, 2026.
Lakelands Public Health has issued a Cold Warning for the County of Haliburton, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County and the City and County of Peterborough effective Saturday, January 24 to Sunday, January 25.
Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts low temperatures combined with significant wind chill values. Temperatures are expected to drop to -20°C, and lower with the wind chill creating conditions that significantly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Forecasted temperatures for these dates include:
- Friday night: -24
- Saturday morning: -16 | Night: -20
- Sunday morning: -13 | Night: -15
Residents are encouraged to seek protection from the cold. If outside, dress in layers and be sure to cover exposed skin. Exposure to these temperatures and wind may result in frostbite or hypothermia. Those most at risk during extreme cold include:
- People experiencing homelessness or living without adequate heat
- Older adults
- Infants and young children
- Individuals with chronic respiratory, cardiac, or mental health conditions
- People taking certain medications or using substances that can affect body temperature, awareness, or circulation
- Individuals with mobility challenges or cognitive impairments
- Outdoor workers and winter sport enthusiasts

Those who need to get warm can visit one of the following locations:
Victoria Hall, 55 King Street West, Cobourg
• Friday, January 23: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Saturday, January 24: 8 a.m. to 11 pm
• Sunday, January 25: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Cobourg Public Library, 200 Ontario Street, Cobourg
• Friday, January 23: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday, January 24: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sunday, January 25: 1 to 5 p.m.
Cobourg Community Centre, 750 D’Arcy Street, Cobourg
• Open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week.
Please note, early morning entrance is through the east side of the building

Overnight Winter Warming Room
Northumberland County provides overnight winter warming room services at County Headquarters (555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg), where residents in need can take shelter from the cold and access washrooms and light refreshments. These services are available seven days a week from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. until March 31, 2026. It is accessible from the rear of the County building using the upper parking lot entrance.
During extreme weather events, residents are remined to visit neighbours, friends, and older family members to ensure their wellbeing.
