Damage estimates are still unknown after the lower portion of St. Michael Catholic elementary School was flooded in Cobourg.
At approximately 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Cobourg Police on regular patrol noticed flooding in the area of the school playground just south of University Avenue West.
Cobourg Fire Department were called for access to the building with water coming out all the doors in the lower portion of the school.
There was approximately 10 inches of water throughout the lower portion of the school. Outside, a large portion of the playground area covered in water.
Lakefront Utilities were called to shut off the water to the school. At press time it’s unknown what caused the flood that covered all the lower classrooms including the gymnasium.
An e-mail went out to all families with children who attend the school on Wednesday morning (December 24, 2025).
The email stated there was “significant flooding” with “crews from the Town of Cobourg were able to shut off the water early this morning. Our facilities team is now assessing the situation and has begun cleanup and drying efforts in the affected areas.”
School officials have not yet determined if there will be any impact on students returning to school on January 5, 2026.
