Quinte West OPP – Focusing on the “Big 4”

In News

The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Belleville Police Service (BPS) will be conducting Focused Patrols on Old Highway 2 between RCAF Road and Tyendinaga on the east end of Belleville.

Focused Patrol analyzes data to determine crime and traffic trends within municipalitie s. With the information gathered detachments are better able to determine where and when resources should be deployed.

Data analysis shows that weekdays during the commuter hours speeds are high, and people’s attention appears to be distracted. During the month of July between these hours people may see an increase in police presence along this stretch of road.

Since July 3rd, officers with both the Quinte West OPP and Belleville Police Service have issued a combined total of 123 Provincial offences notices.

95 provincial offence notices were issued for speeding.

7 Seatbelt fines.

2 notices for equipment defects.

4 Commercial Motor Vehicle fines were issued

8 notices were issued for drivers not having valid documentation.

1 fine for Cannabis readily available to the driver of a motor vehicle.

4 notices for other moving violations.

2 notices were also issued for failing to move over for emergency vehicle.

Motorist should be aware that in Ontario the Highway Traffic Act states:
Sec 159(2) Upon approaching an emergency vehicle with its lamp producing intermittent flashes of red light that is stopped on a highway with two or more lanes of traffic on the same side of the highway as the side on which the emergency vehicle is stopped, the driver of a vehicle travelling in the same lane that the emergency vehicle is stopped in or in a lane that is adjacent to the emergency vehicle, in addition to slowing down and proceeding with caution as required by subsection (1), shall move into another lane if the movement can be made in safety.

Officers from the Quinte West Detachment and the Belleville Police Service are committed to ensuring the roads in Quinte Region are safe for everyone that uses them.
