Peterborough County OPP – Advising of Possible Paving Scam

The Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising community members to be cautious of a possible paving scam.

On Wednesday June 18, 2025, the Peterborough County OPP received a call from a community member in the Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township. The caller advised that a salesman came to their door advising that they were paving in the area and could pave their driveway for $6,000. The complainant agreed to the price and a transfer of funds was completed. The driveway was paved however the next day, the driveway appeared to be falling apart. The caller advised that they were not the only one in the neighbourhood who had work done.

The Peterborough County OPP want to remind everyone that these types of Scams happen on a regular basis and can be avoided by these simple tips/reminders.

·      If it sounds too good to be true, chances are it is.

·      Quality contractors don’t need to go door to door as their schedules are already booked ahead.

·      Do your research before agreeing to a contractor and read any fine print in any contracts

·      If you have concerns that it might be a scam, call your local police agency.

The OPP urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious paving offers or contractor activity. If you believe you have been targeted by a paving scam, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
