City of Belleville – Council Moves to Fill Vacant Seat

In City Hall, Local

During tonight’s (May 26, 2025) Belleville City Council meeting, Council was provided options to fill the vacant councillor seat, previously held by Chris Malette.

As outlined in the May 26 report from Corporate Services, the options were to hold a by-election or appoint a person for the remainder of the term ending in November 2026.

The decision was made to appoint the eighth place finisher in Ward 1 in the 2022 municipal election, Kelly McCaw, to the vacant seat with the condition that she confirms her interest in accepting the appointment, and that she meets the eligibility requires to hold office as a member of council in accordance with the Municipal Act.

Pending confirmation, this would be the sixth appointment of a member of Belleville City Council since 2001. Details on a swearing-in ceremony will be provided when available.
