In Local

The Cobourg Mayor’s Fourth Annual Cigarette Butt Cleanup took place on Saturday, April 26, 2025 starting at the Cobourg Marina.

The event is part of the 15th annual Mayors’ Keep the County Clean Challenge which takes place from April 21 to 26, 2025.

“It’s important to remind everyone to pick up little bits of garbage because we want to keep our community clean,” said Mayor Lucas Cleveland.

A number of people and families showed up for the event on Saturday and ventured out around the marina and downtown area.

There have been 116,632 cigarette buts cleaned up in the previous years.

The cigarete butts are shipped to Terracycle; a recycling company that breaks down the cigarette butts back into plastic pieces that are then processed to make plastic benches and picnic tables.

Cigarette butts are make of a plastic called cellulose Acetate.

One cigarette can contaminate 1000 litres of water.
