Video – Cobourg Mayor Comments on Post Consumer Plant Closure

In News

Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland said he saddened to learn on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 that Post Consumer Brands Cereal Plant will be shutting down at the end of December 2025.

Post has been a valued member of the business community in Cobourg since 2017 when the company acquired Weetabix.

Cleveland said the closure of the D’Arcy Street plant with approximately 150 jobs, “ will be felt throughout Northumberland.”

“We’ve been in contact with the team over there. This is a heartbreaking announcement. The community, this town, I and council will do everything and anything we can to help Post – if there is anything we can do to reverse this decision, potentially saving this organization. This is devastating news for the entirety of our community.”

Cleveland said if the jobs can’t be saved, “we’ll make sure that every service, every opportunity is provided to those employees who are valued members of our community.”

“These are our neighbours, and our friends who have had very unfortunate news. I look forward to doing whatever we can as a council and as a town to support those individuals.”

“This is a large, large multi-national corporation – I’m not sure what can be done, but I’ve already started looking into it.”

In 2008, the Kraft plant closed in Cobourg with a loss of 380 jobs.

Cleveland said he’s also looking into what the town was able to offer employees during that time period.
