Tree Removal at Port Hope Town Hall

In Local

The Municipality of Port Hope is committed to the responsible care and management of our urban trees.

As part of our annual review and maintenance program, municipal staff—under the guidance of a certified Arborist—regularly assess the health and stability of trees on municipal properties, including those near Town Hall.

Following recent pruning efforts, our team has identified the Butternut tree located on the north side of the front lawn at Town Hall as a significant safety concern. The tree is aging, structurally compromised, and in poor health, with extensive decay in the trunk and main stems, as well as large dead limbs. An Arborist report has classified the tree as hazardous and recommended its removal.

Although Butternut trees are protected, DNA testing confirmed this one is a Hybrid, allowing its removal under standard municipal procedures. The removal of the tree is now underway.

We recognize the significance of trees in our community and remain committed to balancing preservation with public safety. A similar assessment will be conducted on the Butternut tree in Memorial Park in 2025, with DNA testing planned to determine the appropriate course of action.

Additionally, replanting considerations are included in the Municipality’s roads and parks operational plans and are considered to be a priority.

We appreciate the community’s understanding as we undertake this necessary work to maintain a safe and sustainable urban tree canopy.
