Cobourg Police Service Warns Residents of Contractor Fraud

In Police Blotter

The Cobourg Police Service is issuing a warning to residents following a recent report of contractor fraud in Cobourg.

In the fraud report submitted to police, a resident reported that they had been approached in March of 2024 by a man posing as a contractor who offered renovation services. The resident made a down payment, but they never returned to complete the work and has since stopped responding to phone calls.

The investigation is ongoing.

Cobourg Police reminds residents to protect themselves from these types of scams.

1. Verify Credentials: Always check the credentials of contractors. Ask for references and verify their
business licences.

2. Get Multiple Quotes: Obtain quotes from several contractors to compare prices and services.

3. Use Written Contracts: Ensure all agreements are in writing, detailing the scope of work, timelines,
and payment schedules.

4. Avoid Large Upfront Payments: Be cautious of contractors who demand large upfront payments. A
small deposit is reasonable, but the majority of payment should be made upon completion of the
work.

5. Research Online: Look up the contractor’s name and business online to check for reviews or any
reports of fraud.

6. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, trust your instincts and seek a second opinion.

If you have been a victim of a scam, report the incident to the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website has a list of known scams and information about how to protect yourself
