Video – Construction “Milestone” Reached as Walton Street Gets Paved in Port Hope

In Local

There are a few more metres to travel but the Walton Street construction in Port Hope is nearing the finish line.

On Monday, November 11, 2024 dumptrucks were lined along Walton Street for most of the day as the street was being paved.

The project involves work along Walton Street from Church Street to Mill Street.

With infrastructure more than a century old, work included replacement of storm sewers, sanitary sewers and watermain systems.

The municipality also took the opportunity to improve roadway reconstruction, accessibility, and streetscape improvements.

With the paving of Walton Street, downtown businesses are counting down the days to the reopening of Walton Street.

“Today’s is a milestone,” said Queenies Bake Shop owner Adam Pearson.

“They (construction workers) have been working extremely hard.”

A number of dump trucks were lined along Walton Street as the two layers of asphalt were installed.

Downtown businesses have suffered as the necessary work takes place.

“It’s been a long summer for all the business owners downtown as the traffic has been reduced quite significantly, but we are overwhelmingly happy on what’s to come soon. Staying on track for timing has been key for the municipality and it’s really nice to see we are still there.”

Pearson asks that people keep supporting the downtown as the final few weeks are completed.

Sidewalks still need to be installed along with the streetlights reinstalled.

“There is more phases to go – but it’s coming together real quick.”

Everything is on track for completion Pearson said, “as long as Mother Nature cooperates.”
