Belleville Police – Public Safety Alert

In Police Blotter

The Belleville Police Service is issuing an urgent public safety warning regarding a potentially contaminated illicit drug supply in the Belleville area.

Several recent overdoses – 11 during a two-hour span Tuesday afternoon alone – suggest the presence of dangerous additives in the local illegal drug supply chain.

There have been no deaths reported as a result of the incidents.

The incidents began around 3 p.m. with two individuals experiencing overdoses near the intersection of Bridge and Coleman Streets, followed by a third person on Front Street.

Around 5 p.m., officers attended a commercial lot on North Front Street and found a total of eight people experiencing overdoses.

All of those impacted were treated by emergency medical personnel.

In light of this rash of incidents, Belleville Police are advising those who utilize illicit drugs:

· Exercise caution: If you or someone you know uses drugs, please be aware that current supplies may contain unexpected, highly toxic substances.

· Do not use alone: Using drugs in isolation increases the risk of fatal overdose. We strongly recommend users have a trusted person nearby.

· Carry Naloxone: Naloxone kits can temporarily reverse opioid overdoses. Kits are available at local pharmacies.

· Seek Immediate Help: If an overdose occurs, call 911 right away.

For more information on overdose prevention and harm reduction resources, please contact the Hastings Prince Edward Public Health Unit at hpepublichealth.ca or 613-966-5500.
