Video – Cobourg’s Water Tower in Place – But Still Lots of Work Ahead

In Editor Choice, Local

Cobourg’s newest water tower was hoisted in place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, but there is still lots of work ahead before completion.

The new elevated tank and booster pump station is location at 700 D’Arcy Street, just south of the Cobourg Community Centre.

Landmark Structures Co. have been working on the third water tower for the town. The others towers are on Ontario Street and near Northumberland Hills Hospital.

In May 2022, Lakefront Utility Services Inc. (LUSI) initiated a Study to address capacity limitations in the Town of Cobourg’s drinking water system. The goal of the study was to identify the preferred location for a new Elevated Tank and Booster Pump Station. The need for this project was documented in the Town of Cobourg’s Drinking Water System Master Plan, completed in 2021.

Various potential locations were identified for the new Elevated Tank and Booster Pump Station. Each location was evaluated based on its impact to the natural environment, social/ cultural impacts, technical merits and financial cost. The preferred site identified was 700 D’Arcy Street, southeast of the Cobourg Community Centre.

Approximately 450 m3 of concrete, which required approximately 60 loads was trucked in to the site to construct the foundation with approximately another 250 cubic metres to complete from the pedestal to the dome cap.

The D’Arcy Street elevated water storage tank will store approximately 5,000 cubic meters of drinking water for daily and emergency use within Cobourg which is roughly the volume of two Olympic swimming pools.

The water tower/boosting tank is the first in Canada because it incorporates a booster pumping station within the tank pedestal. The pedestal houses the pumping, mechanical, and electrical equipment needed for the operation of the facility.

The critical new infrastructure will add to the reliability & safety of Cobourg’s distribution system for generations and will support growth and development.

Target completion date of August 2025.
