Today’s Northumberland has learned the cleanliness of the encampment in Cobourg is not the responsibility of the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit.

Today’s Northumberland sent an e-mail to the HKPR District Health Unit asking questions including:

· does the HKPR Health Unit check the cleanliness of the encampment?

· could there be a point where it is not inhabitable due to the unsanitary conditions of it?

· if it is checked, how often is it?

· when it started a number of people came in to clean it I believe once a week.

· is that still continuing?

The Inspections Team with the HKPR District Health Unit stated in a e-mail, “It is the responsibility of the property owner, Minister of Infrastructure to maintain the property. The minister has provided the site with portable toilets, hand washing stations and garbage dumpsters. The Minister has contracted security for the site who also monitored the site daily.

HKPR responds to complaints regarding private properties and would provide direction to the owner or refer the complaints to local bylaw depending on the nature of the complaint.”
