Bogus collection agency scam
A Port Hope man on the 23rd of August 2018 notified Port Hope Police after he received a telephone call from a collection agency indicating he had and outstanding cellular phone bill with Wind Freedom Mobile. The caller gave the man a number to contact in order to make arrangements to pay. The problem is the man has never had a contract with this mobile provider. He contact Wind Freedom Mobile directly and a representative advised him to contact Police. Police are advising residents to be aware of such scams. If you receive invoices in the mail or on line be sure to double check the validity. Other scams circulating this month were the “PayPal” Scam, compromised credit card scam and the CRA scam.
Man charged after a 911 call for a disturbance.
A 24 year old Port Hope man is in custody after Port Hope Police responded to a domestic dispute in the Walton Street/Church Street area. On the 23rd of August shortly before 8:00pm Police received a 911 call to attend the residence for a violent disturbance. Police located a man on the street and a woman in a nearby residence. An investigation revealed the two were involved in an argument over laundry. The man is alleged to have smashed furniture and physically assault the female described as his common law partner. He was arrested at the scene. He is facing charges of assault, mischief and failing to comply with a condition of a recognizance. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. No names will be released.
Night fishing ban in effect
Port Hope Police are advising anglers of the night fishing ban that is in effect on the Ganaraska River. The ban went into effect August 15th and will be in effect until September 30th 2018. No fishing is permitted from the Molson Street Bridge south to the Robertson Street Bridge during the night. The ban is in place from 8:00pm until 6:00am daily. Port Hope Police Officers are enforcing this by-law the fine is $150.00
