A Bit Of Tweaking Needed for Concrete Blocks on Pier in Cobourg

There was a bit of tweaking of the concrete blocks on the pier after paramedics responded to a medical emergency on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

The blocks were put in place recently to prevent vehicle traffic on the pier, but still allowing enough space for paramedics.

Unfortunately, the space was to tight for the ambulance on the pier.

“I’ve confirmed that our ambulances would not be able to pass between this new blocking,” said Northumberland Paramedics Chief, Susan Brown.

“That said, such a circumstance is not uncommon for many outdoor responses such as the beach, golf courses, concerts and events, where paramedics are required to park the vehicle and walk to a patient, using a stretcher for conveyance back to the vehicle.

On Wednesday, Parks Department staff made the blocks wider to allow emergency vehicles to pass through.

Communications Manager with the Town of Cobourg, Kara Euale stated, “The intent of the concrete blocks is to indicate that vehicles, other than emergency response crews, are not permitted on the pier.

The pier is closed to general vehicle access due to structural instability below the asphalt.”
