Work came to a halt on Thursday, June 20, 2024 as workers discovered what was believed to be a grenade in the area of Highland Drive in Port Hope.

The work is being done as part of the Port Hope Area Initiative.

Port Hope Police were immediately contacted at approximately 9:30 a.m. after workers discovered what appeared to be a grenade on the site which is behind the Jack Burger Sports Complex.

For precautionary measures, the Jack Burger Sports Complex was closed, and Port Hope High School was placed in a lock and secure. Highland Drive was also closed by members of the Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services.

Northumberland County Paramedics were on standby on Cavan Street by Highland Drive.

The Department of National Defense was notified and members of CFB Trenton arrived at the site at approximately noon and discovered shortly after the grenade was a replica.

“Police said the measures were taken out of an abundance of caution and are grateful for the support from the public and emergency services,” said Port Hope Police Inspector Katie Andrews.
