The Northumberland County Firefighter Recruit Class of 2024 spent their last weekend in training at the Harwood Firehall in Hamilton Township.
On Saturday (June 8, 2024) approximately 25 firefighters learned about auto extrication techniques and on Sunday (June 9, 2024) the recruits used a variety of extrication equipment to get hands-on experience.
Hamilton Township Fire Chief Mike Robinson said it’s the 10th anniversary for the course that teaches recruit firefighters from across Northumberland County all aspects of firefighting.
“We have representation from each department here. We have instructors have come from across the County helping out with the instruction.”
Since starting the program locally, over 250 firefighters have graduated.
“It’s certainly giving them their certification here at home with the Northumberland County ways (of firefighting) with Northumberland County instructors.”
Robinson adds that training locally, gives the firefighters a chance to work with and get to know other firefighters from neighbouring departments they likely will be working with at major fires when they happen.
The recruits spent 18 weekends starting in February and will be completing their course in July with exams.
When completed the firefighters will be certified just like any full-time firefighter in the Province.
On Sunday, the recruits used their training for glass management (breaking glass safely on the vehicles for both the firefighter and victim’s safety), removing doors, roofs and lifting the dashboard.
The evolution of rescue equipment has come along way over the decades.
When the first extrication tools were used by firefighters it was almost took two firefighters to hold the equipment.
Now, most of the equipment is battery operated and much easier to use for one firefighter.
“It’s certainly something that has moved quick and as we come through battery technology, car technology, it’s something the manufacturers are racing to do.”
Having most of the extrication tools made by various manufacturers it gives the recruits a chance to try various extrication equipment.
Robinson said that approximately 15% of the recruits were women stating that they are, “some of the best and brightest” recruits.
Overall, Robinson said he’s thrilled with Sunday’s training.
“I think it’s great. It’s like a seed in a budding flower. They get to start when they are super green and coming into their final days and are going to be set loose and this is our next generation.”
