Victoria Hall Volunteers Welcome Distinguished Speaker

In Upcoming Events

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Victoria Hall Volunteers invite you to an evening with a distinguished guest – the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, former Chief Justice of Canada.

The first woman to hold this position, Justice McLachlin was the longest-serving Chief Justice in Canadian history.

Her judicial career began in April 1981 with her appointment to the Vancouver County Court. Five months later, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December 1985 and appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, receiving her appointment as Chief Justice on Jan. 7, 2000. She retired on Dec. 15, 2017.

She is also a best-selling author, the press release noted.

This appearance is the latest in a long line of distinguished speakers the group has brought to the local community. Their long-standing Viewpoint series featured entire seasons of prominent figures such as Waterfront Regeneration Trust founder David Crombie, science journalist Thomas Pawlick, and politician and humanitarian Flora MacDonald.

These fundraisers – along with many others, such as the 2010 ball commemorating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Victoria Hall – help the group carry out its mission of preserving and enhancing the heritage and historical aspects of this unique asset that continues to flourish today.

Along with advocacy, this work includes such solid contributions as the restoration of the building’s clock tower, providing new floor and lighting system in the third-floor Art Gallery of Northumberland, and such enhancements to the second-floor Concert hall as two superb pianos, electronic blinds for 22 windows, concert seating and banquet chairs.

VHV acknowledge the co-hosts Carrie A. Macarthur Low and Beebee and Associates in this May 3 event, which will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Concert Hall.

Tickets are $30, available in Cobourg at Acanthus Interiors and Let’s Talk Books, as well as through the Concert Hall Box Office (905-372-2210 or concerthallatvictoriahall.com)
