The Cobourg Highland Games may have become the Northumberland Scottish Festival and Highland Games and relocated to Port Hope, but Councillor Aaron Burchat wanted to acknowledge their legacy in Cobourg.

Sitting as chair of council’s Community Protection and Economic Development standing committee this week, Burchat gave a shout-out to “the Highland Games committee, volunteers, organizers, everyone involved that came out for those many years in Cobourg. They’ve been a fixture in the community since 1963, and I just want to acknowledge them and wish them the best of luck in their move to Port Hope and a larger area, and success for many years.

“The staff send along a note of thanks as well,” he added.

The move was announced in December, a step taken in order to have a festival in the larger area of the Port Hope Agricultural Park in a location where parking is free. This year’s first-ever Northumberland Scottish Festival and Highland Games will take place June 14 and 15.
