On December 10th, 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a landmark document that sets forth fundamental human rights for all. Notably, Canada played a pivotal role in the development of the UDHR, with Canadian John Peters Humphrey crafting the initial draft by hand and overseeing the drafting process as the Director of the Human Rights Division at the United Nations in New York.
On Sunday, December 10, 2023, the issue of migration has become increasingly urgent, with a historic surge in refugees and displaced persons seeking sanctuary worldwide. Article 14 of the UDHR emphasizes the right of everyone to seek asylum from persecution in other countries.
In commemoration of the UDHR’s Anniversary, Metropolis Americas will host its annual summit in New York City on December 11th and 12th, 2023, focusing on the theme of Migrants’ Rights. This summit aims to bring together researchers, policy makers, service providers, and civil society from across the Americas to explore solutions for safe, orderly, and regular migration. We invite proposals addressing global migration challenges, with a particular emphasis on the current state of migrants’ rights. Your insights and contributions will play a vital role in shaping the dialogue on this critical issue.
