Video – Lithium Battery Believed To Blame For Early-Morning Cobourg Fire

In Local, Photo Gallery

A family was forced out of their Perry Street home early Monday morning after a fire erupted in their driveway, with a lithium battery believed to be the cause.

Cobourg firefighters were called to the Perry Street address shortly after 5:18 a.m. on September 14 following multiple reports of a fire in the driveway.

When crews arrived, they were met with an active fire involving a utility vehicle and other debris.

The fire had already spread beyond the vehicle, sending firefighters into action to prevent the flames from reaching the nearby home.

The family was evacuated as crews quickly attacked the blaze.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire before it extended into the residence.

Crews then conducted an overhaul of the area, checking for hidden fire and hot spots to make sure the blaze was completely extinguished.

Despite the intensity of the fire, there was no extension into the house and no injuries were reported.

The preliminary belief is that a lithium battery was responsible for starting the fire.

The incident is another reminder of the potential dangers associated with lithium batteries, particularly when they fail or become damaged.

Firefighters remained on scene until they were satisfied the area was safe.
