Video – Air Canada Jet Circles Cobourg and Port Hope After Mechanical Issue

In Local

Residents across Cobourg and Port Hope spent much of Monday, August 3, 2026, looking to the skies as an Air Canada passenger jet repeatedly circled the area at a relatively low altitude.

Numerous people contacted Today’s Northumberland after noticing the aircraft flying over the communities for nearly two hours, prompting questions about why it remained overhead for so long.

According to Air Canada Media Relations, Flight AC2454, operated by Air Canada Rouge, had departed Toronto for St. John’s when the crew detected a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff.

As a precaution, the pilots elected to return to Toronto. Before landing, the aircraft circled in the vicinity of Cobourg and Port Hope at an altitude of approximately 4,100 feet to burn off excess fuel, a standard procedure that allows an aircraft to reduce its landing weight.

The aircraft landed safely in Toronto without incident.

Passengers later continued their journey to St. John’s aboard a replacement aircraft that departed a short time later.
